Frequently Asked Questions
I’m new — what should I book? It depends on what you want to make, but the best options for beginners is a hand building session or One and Done session on the wheel. Anyone can be successful with handbuilding. The wheel is very popular, but it can be complicated. With the one and done you will have an instructor to center your clay, do a demonstration, and then guide you thru making your pieces
What is open studio? Open Session does not have any planned project, but we are more than happy to help you create your pieces and techniques. You are free to choose between the wheel or hand building.
What is included in the membership? The monthly membership, 24/7 access with a key to come and go even when the studio is closed, use of all studio equipment, house glazes and firing services, a dedicated shelf space for their work in progress, 25 pounds of clay each month, bring a friend for free once a month, discounts on workshops
What is the difference between a wheel session and hand building? The wheel session you are working with wet clay on a spinning plate and you sculpt the clay while the wheel is spinning. You only make round items. Because it is wet clay, you will need to let the clay dry before you can move onto the next step. Hand building is done sitting at a table and you will manipulate the clay by pinching and coiling or sculpting. Once you have completed your piece you can paint it and then once dry you can continue your process. Hand building allows you to create any shaped items.
